The arrival of spring means that it’s also indoor junior nationals season and they wrapped up over Easter weekend in Vancouver and Toronto.
At the U14 Fischer Indoor Junior Nationals held at the UBC Tennis Centre in Vancouver, top-seeded Andy Tchinda Kepche of Quebec defeated third-seeded Aedan Malik of Ontario 6-3, 6-4 to be crowned boys’ singles champion. Meanwhile, Joshua Noah Adamson topped Caden Edward Colburne 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 to finish third. Andy Tchinda Kepche and Caden Edward Colburne also teamed up to take home the boys’ doubles title.

In the girls’ singles championship flight, Joyce Geng of British Columbia finished atop the podium thanks to a 6-3. 6-1 victory over Ontario’s Anastasia Malysheva in the final. Andrea Cabio of Ontario earned a third-place finish after securing a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 win over Charlie Gabrielle Celebrini in the 3 vs. 4 play-off. Laurence Demers and Andrea Taylor lifted the girls’ doubles trophy after beating Lily Rochon and Jacey Tian 4-6, 6-3, 12-10.
Players competing in this year’s edition of the U14 Fischer Indoor Junior Nationals had the pleasure of meeting world no. 81 Rebecca Marino who stopped by to offer tips and advice before beginning her preparations for this weekend’s Billie Jean King Cup qualifying round tie between Team Canada presented by Sobeys and Belgium.
Meanwhile at the U18 Fischer Indoor Junior Nationals held at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, third-seeded Kuang Qing Xu of Quebec upset top-seeded Duncan Chan of Ontario 6-3, 6-4 in the boys’ singles championship match to earn the coveted title of national champion. Quebec’s Junghee You finished third Aleksandar Mitric and Sasha Rozin took home the boys’ doubles crown on the strength of a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Matej Kajzer and You in the final.

In the girls’ singles final, third-seeded Nadia Lagaev of Ontario defeated fifth-seeded Catherine Gagnon of Quebec 6-1, 6-4. Lagaev lost just one set en route to the title and also won four 6-0 sets during the tournament. Quebec’s Raphaëlle Leroux knocked out Saskatchewan’s Teah Chavez 6-1, 6-4 to round out the podium. Chavez and Josie Usereau captured the doubles title thanks to a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over Gagnon and Leroux.
The Fischer Outdoor Junior Nationals will be staged in August across Canada.
