Biography

Tom Tebbutt has been a cornerstone of Canadian tennis media coverage for close to half a century. He attended his first Canadian Open in 1974 at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club and his first Grand Slam tournament at the US Open in Forest Hills, N.Y., that same year. A native of Trois-Rivières, Québec, he was a freelance writer and broadcaster for several years before moving from Montreal to Toronto to become the editor of Racquets Canada magazine in 1983-84. From 1985 until 1991, he was the editor/writer of the On Court tennis publication based in Toronto.

Tebbutt was the tennis writer and columnist for The Globe and Mail from 1990 to 2010 before becoming a blogger with a weekly contribution and coverage of Grand Slam and other events for Tennis Canada from 2011 to 2020. In semi-retirement, he has continued coverage of various major competitions for Tennis Canada.

Over three decades beginning in the 1980s, he made daily contributions to the RDS network in French from Grand Slam events and also worked occasionally for Radio-Canada and CBC Sports at the Canadian Open tournaments. From 2011 to 2019, he co-hosted a summer tennis radio show on Sportsnet 590 The Fan in Toronto.

Tebbutt has also written for newspapers and tennis publications in several countries and covered more than 140 Grand Slam tournaments – including 44 French Opens – as well as every Canadian Open since 1974.

He was a founding board member of the International Tennis Writers Association (ITWA) for seven years and received the George Gross Career Achievement Award from Sports Media Canada in 2015.

Tebbutt’s love and passion for the game brought tennis to generations of Canadians across the country.
