Biography
Young held the No. 1 position in singles in Canada for five years, 1937, 1939, 1940, 1946 and 1948 and in the 1930’s was twice #2 and once #3. But for the intervention of the war years when no tournaments were played nor rankings published, she would likely have been a dominating presence in women’s tennis for more than a decade.
Eleanor Young grew up playing at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club. She played doubles with Caroline Deacon at the 1935 Wimbledon Championship and also at the 1934 Canadian Championships (Rogers Cup) winning their first title as a pair.
Young won the Canadian Championship women’s doubles title again, six years later, in 1940, only this time she was teamed up with Jean Milne. She also won the mixed doubles title in 1939. Young was a runner-up in the singles draw at the Canadian Championship in 1934 as she lost to her doubles partner, Deacon in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. She won the title in 1940 when she defeated her doubles partner, Milne in straight sets 7-5, 7-5. She was also runner-up on three other occasions in doubles play.
She reached the singles final of the Canadian Championship one more time in 1947, but she fell in three sets to American Graclyn Wheeler Kelleher 6-0, 3-6, 6-0.
